Hurricane awareness tips from "Pet Safe Coalition"
- When evacuating take your pet with you- do not leave your pet behind!
- Red Cross shelters do not accept pets. You must make your own plans for your pets, keeping in mind that animals are happiest in a familiar environment.
- Prepare a a pet disaster kit. Include medical records, medications, vet name & number, first aid kit, collars and leashes, food, water, and bowls.Include a photo of your pet.
- Make sure you have a sturdy crate for each animal. Pets will be more welcome in an emergency sheltering situation if they are contained.
- Ask friends, relatives, etc. outside the affected area whether they could shelter your animals.
- Contact hotels & motels outside your area for their policies on accepting pets, ask if "no pets" policies could be waved in an emergency.
- Make sure all dogs & cats are wearing securely fastened collars with up to date identification.
- Bring pets inside well in advance of a hurricane so that you don't have to search for them if you have to evacuate. As hurricane approaches make calls to confirm emergency shelter arrangements.
- Never evacuate without your pets.
