About the Shelter Connection

Our Mission

The Shelter Connection was founded in 2000. We are an all volunteer organization at the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter in Port Washingon, NY.  Our volunteers are professionally trained as adoption advisors and dog handlers, and our fundraising efforts support many shelter improvement programs. We hope to improve the quality of the life for the homeless dogs at our shelter by increasing adoptions through training and socialization and through educational outreach teaching the public that shelter dogs are not "damaged goods."

Secondary missions are:

  • To educate adopters in breed choices and responsible care of dogs
  • To help with post adoption problem solving
  • To provide general public education about the availability of shelter dogs as well as the need to spay and neuter animals
  • To provide humane educational programs for young people

Our adoption advisors are ready to help the public.

Trained dog handlers work with our dogs.
